SPECIAL FOREWORD TO THE CHINESE EDITION
There `s an old saying that there are no strangers , only friends you haven`t met yet .This is exactly the way I feel about China and not just because you have us so hungely out-numbered .I know I would like all of you – especially if you buy me dinner –and I truly feel that our two countries have a great deal in common ; simple things, like Jackie Chan and Yao Ming And even though the only thing I can say in Chinese is “happy new year!” I would like to say a few words to all Chinese friends I haven`t met yet.
First , a word about Dexter . It is important for you to know that he is just a character in a book, and he is certainly not based on anything I have done. I have never actually been convicted of any serious crime , and so for very good legal reasons , you must think of Dexter as purely fictional ; remember , I have never been caught . Besides , if I had really done any of the things Dexter does , I would certainly have told somebody by now – at least my accountant , because with the US Income Tax , research for a book is deductible .
So Dexter is not real , and he is not me . I do believe , however , that there are lots of real serial killers out there in the world , and I also believe that there are probably a few very good , very smart ones , like Dexter ,who never get caught , so it`s probably an excellent idea to lock your door at night . Of course , if it`s Dexter at your door you can probably get him to leave you alone by offering him a nice Cuban sandwich.
Perhaps you don`t have Cuban sandwiches in China . Thins would be very sad , because the are really good , and it would also be very unfair , bedause they have excellent Chinese food in Cuba . If I was China , I would try to get some Cuban cooks to move there . Most of them are good musicians and dancers , too , so your night life would improve , expecially if you like to dance the mambo . If there are already any really good Chinese Mambo bands , I apologize .
But it`s more than the Cuban sandwiches that have mad Dexter popular. I think people all over the world like Dexter because he does not think of himself as a human being . He watches the rest of us like an outsider and helps us to see ourselves more clearly , and laugh a little bit about how goofy we are – all while providing a valuable social service by killing people who really deserve to die . And this is another thing people love Dexter . Readers from many different countries like the idea that there is somebody out there taking care of the bad guys when the justice system can`t . It`s a little bit like having a friend who can protect you from the school bully . Of course , if you are a shao lin monk , like a Jackie Chan movie you would not have this problem , but there are not very many shao lin monks in Miami .
And so there is Dexter instead . And I would like to say I got the idea for Dexter by watching kung fu movies , because this would probably help me sell a lot of books in China . I would like to say that – But it would not be true . I got the idea for Dexter by watching a room full of business men lie to each other about how happy the were with each other`s success , and talk with food in their months (I was raised to believe that is really worng ) and generally behave like happy monsters . And the idea just popped into my head that serial murder isn`t always a bad thing .
I wrote the first book ,Darkly Dreaming Dexter , with that simple idea in mind , and now five years later, there are four books that have been published in 38 languages all over the world . And there is the television show , Dexter , which has made me many more friends I haven`t met .Dexter is a success – and just in time , because I have a child in college , which is very expensive . More importantly , it has proved once again that people all over the world are much more like each other than we sometimes like to think . Tthat `s a good thing to keep in mind in today `s world .
So even though there was no kung fu movie involved in creating Dexter ,I hope you will enjoy reading these books . If you do ,you should buy lots of copies and give them to your friends . And if you don`t enjoy the books – buy lots of copies and give them to your enemies . After all , it`s your duty . We are friends now.

俗话说，世界上没有陌生人，只有未曾谋面的朋友。我就是这么想中国的，不是因为你们人比我们多我才这么说。我肯定会喜欢你们大家，如果你们请我吃饭我就更肯定了。而且我真觉得我们两个国家有很多相同点，比方说，我们都喜欢成龙和姚明。所以哪怕我只会用中文说一句“新年快乐”，我还是想借此机会对所有未曾谋面的中国朋友们说上几句。
首先说说德克斯特。你可千万要明白，他只是一个小说人物，绝对跟我自己干过的事情没关系。我从来、绝对没有犯过任何形式的罪行，所以看在法律上， 你一定要相信德克斯特是纯粹虚构出来的，一定要记得我从来没进过局子。另外，如果我真的干过德克斯特所干的那事，我肯定已经告诉过其他人了，至少是我的会计，因为按照美国的所得税税法，为了写书所做的研究是可以抵税的。
所以，德克斯特不是真人，他不是我。不过我相当相信，世界上有许多真正的连环杀手，我也相信，他们中大概会有几个非常好、非常聪明的家伙，就像德克斯特那样从来没有被捉住过。所以，你夜里可一定得把门锁好。当然，如果德克斯特真来了，你送他一块美味的古巴三明治，他就不会再烦你了。
也许中国没有古巴三明治，这可太糟了，因为它们真的很好吃，而且古巴有很棒的中餐，中国却没有古巴餐，这很不公平。如果我是中国，我就搬几个古巴出自过去。它们大多数都是出色的音乐家和舞蹈家，能给你们的夜生活增添色彩，尤其是如果你喜欢跳曼波（古巴音乐，由伦巴与爵士乐中的摇摆乐结合而成——译注）的话。如果中国已经有了曼波乐队的话，那我道个歉。
不仅仅是古巴三明治让德克斯特成了宠儿。我想，世界各地都有人喜欢德克斯特是因为他不拿自己当人。他像个外人似的观察我们，也让我们把自己看的更清楚些，还会为自己蠢呼呼的行为笑上几声。他为我们提供了宝贵的社会服务，杀该杀之人。这也是人们喜欢德克斯特的另一个原因。来自五湖四海的读者都喜欢这样一个理念，即当司法体系无能为力的时候，能有人惩治坏蛋，为好人伸张正义。这有点像在学校里有朋友罩着，大块头坏学生不敢再欺负你。当然，如果你是少林武僧，比方像成龙电影里演的那样，你就不会有这些问题，但毕竟没有太多少林武僧，尤其是在迈阿密这种地方。
于是我们有了德克斯特。我听愿意说我是看功夫片找到了关于德克斯特的灵感，这样也许能让我多卖些书给中国读者。我真想这么说。不过，这不是真的。写德克斯特的灵感是从满满一屋子商人那来的。我看着他们互相欺骗，说着“幸会幸会，久仰久仰”，嘴巴里塞满了食物的同时喋喋不休。我的教养告诉我这种习惯实在太不好了。他们跟一群快乐的魔鬼似的。那时我就突然灵机一动，觉得有个连环杀手也许不总是件坏事。
就是这么一个简单的念头，让我写了第一本《双面法医》。到了五年之后的今天，已经有四本以德克斯特为主人公的小说用三十八种文字在全世界出版。还有了电视剧《德克斯特》，给我带来了更多素昧平生的朋友。德克斯特是一个成功，而且这成功来的正是时候，因为我有一个孩子正在上大学，学费特别地贵。更重要的是， 这又一次证明了世界各地的人们比我们有时候以为的要相似得多。记住这一点，对如今的世界来说是件挺重要的事。
所以即使德克斯特的诞生和功夫电影没什么渊源，我还是希望你们能喜欢读这基本书。如果你真的喜欢，你应该再买上好多本送给朋友。如果你不喜欢，那就买好多本送给你的敌人。总之，这是你的责任，因为我们现在已经是朋友了。
