Henin happy to be back in Eastbourne
Defending International Women’s Open champion Justine Henin is playing some of the best tennis of her career – and she is delighted to be back on the grass courts of Devonshire Park.
The world No.1, recently crowned French Open champion for the third consecutive year, is back at Eastbourne to defend the title she won on her south coast debut last year.
The 25-year-old Belgian beat Russia’s Anastasia Myskina in an epic 2006 final, eventually coming through in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5).
Henin sees the tournament not only as ideal preparation for Wimbledon, but also as a prestigious competition in its own right.
Speaking on Monday she said: “I am back here because it’s a really great tournament and I really want to play here. The courts are great and it’s a good feeling to come back here to defend my title.
“It’s good being back on the circuit so quickly after winning in Paris and this week is really going to help me get ready for Wimbledon.”
Henin, the top seed at the International Women’s Open, has received a bye into the second round. She will face either Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland or American Jill Craybas, the latter making it through to the main draw as a lucky loser.
The main draw of the International Women’s Open continues on Tuesday June 19 at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne.
