As TV fans well know, one of the secrets to the success ofStranger Thingsis the theme song and score put together by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, two firm believers in the power of the modular synth and members of the Austin-based group SURVIVE. That group has been on the minds and lips of many a music lover these days because of thatNetflixseries and their outstanding 2016 albumRR7349.
Their winning streak continues with the release of this track, a reworking of a song found onasync, the most recent album by fellow synth enthusiast, soundtrack composer and all around genius Ryuichi Sakamoto (read our review ofasynchere).
On its own the song is a plaintive meditation on mortality, anchored by a unblinking sample of a gent discussing the truth that we wander around uncertain about when our time will come. In SURVIVE’s hands, the mood becomes dark and a little unsettling, the soundtrack to those long nights of the soul when our fevered thoughts simply won’t let us rest.
Keep an eye out for further reworkings ofasynctracks by the likes of Arca, Oneohtrix Point Never and Fennesz in advance of a full album release of the remixes in February 2018.
