Oscars have 'horrible' record recognizing Asians

Our notable Enveloper Wayman Wong has this gripe about the Oscars, triggered by a certain snub in yesterday's nominations. Below, en email harrumph I received from Wayman:


"Yes, it was a record year for black actors and a record year for Latinos, but . . . not for Asian lead actors.


"The Academy had the chance to make history by nominating Ken Watanabe ('Letters from Iwo Jima') as the first Asian up for Best Actor. But it didn't. 

"Last year, the Academy had the chance to make history by nominating Zhang Ziyi (from 'Memoirs of a Geisha') as the first Asian up for Best Actress. 

"After all, Ziyi was nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a SAG and a Satellite Award. But the Academy took a pass. 

"In its 79-year history, the Oscars have a horrible record of recognizing Asian actors in roles of authority, especially in Asian-themed movies. 

"'The Last Emperor' (1987) got 9 Oscar nominations and won them all – but there wasn’t a single Oscar nomination for acting. 

"'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' (2000) got 10 Oscar nominations and won 4 – but there wasn’t a single Oscar nomination for acting. 

"'Memoirs of a Geisha' (2005) got 6 Oscar nominations and won 3 – but there wasn't a single Oscar nomination for acting. 

"'Letters from Iwo Jima' (2006) got 4 Oscar nominations, but there wasn't a single Oscar nomination for acting. 

'When Oscar voters watch these Asian-themed movies, don't they ever notice the actors? 

'Or to quote the old stereotype, do they just all look alike to the Academy? 

"(Yes, Rinko Kikuchi, a Japanese actress, was nominated yesterday, but it was for a supporting role in the globe-trotting "Babel.") 

"Apparently, the Academy is more likely to nominate an Asian if he is in a supporting role mentoring a younger Caucasian actor, like Ken Watanabe in 'The Last Samurai' or Noriyuki Morita in 'The Karate Kid.' Even when the Asian has the most screen time in a film, like Haing S. Ngor in 'The Killing Fields,' he gets bumped down to supporting actor, while the better-known Caucasian star (Sam Waterston) gets positioned for best actor. In the Oscar world, Asians still have a long way to go."

The problem with this is that Wantanabe is in no way the lead actor in Letters From Iwo Jima. It shocks me every time I see someone say this. He is clearly, undeniably supporting. Kazunari Ninomiya' Saigo is the lead role in the film. We see most things through his eyes and he has much more screentime than Wantanabe. It is clearly Saigo's story.

I'd never heard of Kazunari Ninomiya prior to watching Letters from Iwo Jima but I know I won't soon forget him. This talented Japanese actor displays an incredible range and steals Clint Eastwood's film.

Another performer worth singling out is Kazunari Ninomiya, a popular Japanese singing star. Saigo is as far from the stereotype as any character in the film. American movies about World War II demonize the Germans and Japanese. Saigo, however, is just an ordinary guy who thinks the battles are pointless and wants to go home to be with his wife and newborn daughter. Ninomiya's performance brings out the human qualities of Saigo, making viewers reflect about how powerless the pawns are in any war.
