Slip on your most charming qipao, step onto the bluestone floor and let the old Shanghai melodies sway you....Chinese and foreign beauties can commemorate this special evening by having their photo taken seated under the moonlight on an old Shanghai rickshaw just outside Brown Sugar.
The first half of the 'Shanghai Allure' Qipao Party features folk music troupe "Yue Zhi Yuan". Representative of a set of young musical pioneers in modern day China, the group is finding its place in the global musical milieu by integrating traditional Chinese folk with sounds from other cultures to create pieces that resonate with today's listeners. Yue Zhi Yuan play their fusion of diverse ethnic melodies on traditional Chinese pipas, erhus, bamboo flutes, suona horns and digital instruments.
In the second half of the evening, Shanghai-born singer Shao Jiuyuan delivers his new style of Chinese pop that straddles time and geography with its elements of traditional Chinese folk, jazz and 60s-70s oldies. Guests will also enjoy the classic Chinese and Western songs that echoed in Shanghai's shikumen alleyways in the 1930s and 40s.
Only the old shikumen lanes could be the venue for tonight's 'Shanghai Allure' Qipao Party, because only the shikumen contain the essential expression of old Shanghai character. Starting with this essential expression, the 'Shanghai Allure' Qipao Party becomes a manifestation of the 2010 Expo theme "Better City, Better Life" as it reveals the beauty of Shanghai's cultural heritage and inspires us to imagine the possibilities of our city's future.
